Our Work
The COVID-19 pandemic only served to heighten the danger to incarcerated people. The prisons in Philadelphia are notorious for overcrowding, making social distancing impossible, leaving people at a high risk for contracting COVID-19 and limited access to medical care. As a result, DANC partnered with National Bailout to (1) free people from jails, prisons and detention centers and (2) to end the criminalization, arrest and detention of our people during this pandemic (3) for people to have access to safe, non-punitive health care and housing.
In April, DANC raised enough money to bail out three Black mothers and helped to release five more caregivers in time for Mother’s Day. In addition to raising money for bail, DANC also distributed care packages and laptops and tablets as well as provided resources for housing, leadership development, and the reunification of families.
